The quaint little village of Mirador del Carmen
Suggested Itinerary
Start your day driving to the small but very pleasant village of Mirador del Carmen. Here you will find facilities such as WC, a restaurant and a very helpful modern tourist information centre. At the centre you can get leaflets on local attractions as well as specific information on the drive. I found them very helpful. On a clear day, hence the name, you can get pictures from the Mirador. Unfortunately, the day I was here, those normally great views into the valley below were blanked out by a driving mist. I can assure you though, it's very scenic normally!
There are many amazing views to stop and photograph on this drive
Next up, you should head towards El Bailadero not forgetting to stop and get a few photographs of this tree lined avenue - it's only a mile up the road from Mirador del Carmen on your right (it is well signposted).
On the day I visited, there were a lot of people milling about here so I managed to be quick and catch an opportunist photograph between coach loads arriving and departing.
As you can see, the weather up here had cooled down significantly and it was also rainy - so brings clothes for all eventualities!
A few tips to get the most from your trip..
- Don't leave anything of even small value on display in your car - thefts from vehicles are a real problem on this drive
- You're more than 3000ft above sea level on this drive so the weather is changeable rapidly (from sun to rain to mist all in one trip!) - so come prepared
- The roads on this drive can wind around and there are some hairpins - so it's not for everyone - but they do manage to get buses up here so you should be fine!
- Car parking is quite limited as many people stop to take photo's - please don't just stop at the side of the road as it creates danger
The final stop, and in my view the highlight of this trip, was heading to a lovely little fishing village called Taganana. I've included some additional photographs below from my visit, but it's well worth doing what I did and stop to have lunch here at one of the delightful sea front restaurants, where you can eat whilst watching the local fishermen land the days catch..
The stunning seaside village of Taganana, and the highlight of this drive for me
Directions
Quite simple really. To start your drive on the Anaga route, head to Mirador del Carmen. Have a look around here, get some photo's if it's a clear day and maybe have a bite to eat at the excellent restaurant. From here, drive onwards to El Bailadero and end up in Taganana.
Total round trip from the southern resorts such as Costa Adeje, where I was based, is 3-4 hours.
